About This Project
Osun State's Urban Tree Planting & Greening Programme takes a community-first approach to urban greening. Rather than top-down government planting drives, this programme invests in local seedling nurseries, trains community groups in tree care, and creates shared ownership of green spaces.
Over 50,000 trees have been planted across Osun State through this programme, with species selected for ecological appropriateness, shade value, and in many cases edible fruit that provides additional household nutrition benefits. Schools, markets, roadsides, and community centres have all been targeted for planting and greening.
The programme maintains a GIS-based tree registry allowing each planted tree to be tracked for survival and growth. Community 'tree wardens' โ trained volunteers โ monitor and report on tree health in their areas. The programme contributes directly to Osun State's carbon sequestration targets under the Climate Action Plan.
