About This Project
The Iyaloja Ambassador Network is one of the most culturally innovative aspects of Osun State's climate programme. Iyaloja โ the titled leaders of market women's associations โ occupy a position of extraordinary social authority in Yoruba communities. They influence purchasing decisions, mediate disputes, mobilise collective action, and command deep respect across generational lines.
By formally designating Iyaloja leaders as Climate Ambassadors and providing them with training on climate change, circular economy principles, and green business practices, the programme has created a distributed network of trusted messengers who reach communities that no government programme could reach directly.
Ambassadors champion plastic reduction in their markets, encourage adoption of solar lanterns, connect traders to the Recycling Hub ecosystem, and report on environmental issues in their communities. The network spans all 30 LGAs of Osun State.
