The Obafemi Awolowo University has honoured Prof. Chinwe Obuaku-Igwe with its Climate Action Ambassador Award, recognising her transformative leadership in Southwest Nigeria's climate governance.
Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, has conferred its inaugural Climate Action Ambassador Award on Prof. Chinwe Obuaku-Igwe, Director-General & Special Envoy on Climate Change and Renewable Energy for Osun State. The award was presented at OAU's annual Sustainability Forum, attended by faculty, students, and government officials from across Southwest Nigeria.
The award recognises Prof. Obuaku-Igwe's contribution to mainstreaming climate action in sub-national government, her pioneering work on the Osun State Climate Action Plan, and her role in establishing the Iyaloja Ambassador Network — an initiative that has been cited internationally as a model for community-driven climate communication.
In her acceptance remarks, Prof. Obuaku-Igwe paid tribute to the thousands of young people, market women, and community leaders who are the real champions of Osun's climate story. 'Awards are validation. But the real work is in the communities — and that work continues.'
