On World Environment Day 2026, the Office of the DG & Special Envoy on Climate Change launched the Imole Green School Initiative, planting trees across 7 institutions in Osogbo to embed environmental stewardship in the next generation.
On June 5, 2026 — World Environment Day — the Office of the DG & Special Envoy on Climate Change and Renewable Energy took its climate mission directly into the classrooms and schoolyards of Osogbo, planting trees at seven institutions as part of the newly launched Imole Green School Initiative.
Led by Prof. Chinwe Obuaku-Igwe, Director-General & Special Envoy, the campaign brought together hundreds of students, school principals, community leaders, and programme officers across Islamic College Osogbo, Phoebester International School, Olive Branch School, and four additional institutions in the Osogbo metropolis. At each school, students personally planted seedlings in their school grounds — turning the day into a hands-on lesson in environmental responsibility.
The Imole Green School Initiative is designed to make every school in Osun State a living green space — where students are not just taught about climate change in theory, but are active participants in reversing it. Each seedling planted represents a young person who has made a personal commitment to the environment.
'We are greening Osun's future — one school, one student, one tree at a time,' Prof. Obuaku-Igwe told gathered students. 'Every tree you plant today will still be standing when you are adults, and it will tell the story of what you chose to do for your community and your planet.'
The seven institutions collectively planted over 200 tree seedlings on the day, with school environmental clubs designated as custodians responsible for the ongoing care and monitoring of the trees. The initiative builds on Osun State's broader target of 100,000 trees planted by 2027 under the state's Climate Action Plan.
